The stotra for a child

Several people have asked us at the post about a mantra, slokha or stotra for begetting children.
We have always advised such people to get in touch with doctors and undergo the treatment that is recommended for them. However, as the saying goes, “God only helps those who help themselves.” What this means is that we need the grace or blessings of God apart from medicine for achieving many things in life.
A calm and peaceful atmosphere and a stressfree environment at home would lead to greater efficiency of work at office. Harmony at home would translate to a better life.
Our shastras, puranas and even the Geetha lay stress on well-being and good physical and mental environment. Remembering God, even if it is for a moment, would suffice. No religion in the world preaches hatred or enemity. All religions talk of  devotion, faith and sincerity.
So if you have faith in a particular god or religion, it would help you successfully climb and overcome difficult phases of your life. Our shastras and puranas are our heritage. There is nothing wrong if e learn about them or if we are guided by them, There are many aspects of life that have been dealt with in our scriptures and they include respect to women, right living and right thinking, non-violence, sincerity and devotion to God and several other aspects.
Today, the cases of  delayed child birth and/or childlessness is on the increase. Stress, hectic life style, junk food, alcohol and smoking and of course a sedentary life have all contributed to this problem. Several decades ago, when there was no medicine or treatment to deal with such issues, elders in a family advised childless couples to visit a temple of Subramanya and perform Sarpa Dosha. The Ghati subramanya nead Doddaballapur and Kukke Subramanya near Dharmastala are well-known for performing such rituals.
Apart from getting rid of Sarpa Dosha, our elders always asked us to keep faith in god and perform pooje to certain gods and goddesses. Today, such seves are regularly performed at Mantralaya, Abbur, Sonde and at various pilgrim places, including Cheluva Narayanaswamy in Melkote, Sri Krishna in Udupi, Manjunatha in Dharmastala, Marikamba in Sirsi and other places.
In case, you are not able to visit the holy places and perform seve,  our scriptures have said performing pooje at home is adequate.  There are several mantras and slokhas that are believed to have divine powers to help couples who want to have children. Of course this does not mean that a couple would get a child as soon as such a mantra or slokha is recited. Such slokhas will aid in the process.
One such slokha is called the Go Savitri Stotra. The lyrics are in Kannada and English and it starts with a prayer to Narayana or Hari.

This is one of the many stotras on begetting a child. There are several other stotras and slokas. As you can see, it will take three minutes or less to recite the entire slokha. If we can spend thousands of rupees on medicine and on doctors, can’t we spend only a few minutes remembering God. After all, there is no money for reciting these mantras and slokhas. All that is needed is devotion, faith and sincerity.

Just as medical intervention too takes time, our faith and devotion too takes time for the Gods to accede to our prayer. Never lose faith and you will always be rewarded.

The stotra to get back riches and money

One of the greats saints of  Madhwa parampare is Vadiraja Theertha (1480-1600).
He belonged to the Sode Matha, which today is better known as Vadiraja Matha. He was given deeksha by Vageesh Theertha and
He was born in Gowri Gadde and his Brindavana is in Sode near Sirsi.
Vadiraja has several brilliant compositions and philosophical works to his credit. He was one of the most prominent disciples of Vyasa Raja or Vyasa Theertha (1447-1539). He was a contemporary of several Madhwa saints and Haridasas such as Surendra Theertha, Vijendra Theertha and Sudhindra Theertha of Raghavendra Swamy Matha,  Srinivasa Theertha and Rama Theertha of Sosale Vyasaraja Matha and several others.
He knew Purandara Dasa, Belur Vaikunta Dasa, Kanaka Dasa, Annamacharya and others.
Vadiraja Theertha was a frequent visitor at Hampi and he is believed to have been one of the outstanding visiting professors of
the Vijayanagar University of which Vyasa Raja was the Chancellor.
However, after the passing away of Vyasa Raja in 1539, his visit to Vijayanagar or Hampi became less and less frequent. However, when he heard that Achuta Deva Raya (1529-1542) was in distress as the Kingdom’s treasury was empty, he helped out the Hindu Kingdom by revealing the secret treasures that had been hidden in the rocks around Hampi.
Vadiraja Theertha also composed a stotra and asked Achuta Deva Raya to recite it to regain all the lost wealth of Vijayanagar. Of course, the stotra helped the Raya regain the lost wealth.
Vadiraja Theertha asked Achuta Deva Raya to recite the sloka a thousand times. Achuta Deva Raya did so and he was able to get hold of untold wealth.
A little known fact about Achuta Deva Raya is that he patronized Purandara Dasa and he himself was an accomplished Veena player.
Coming back to Vadiraja, both Krishna Deva Raya and his half-brother, Achuta Deva Raya, had high regard for the saint from Sode.
This is how the stotra that Vadiraja taught Achuta Deva Raya goes. It can be recited if you have lost money and or wealth. Be sure to recite it after doing sankalpa.

The Anu Vayu Stuti

The Sri Hari Vayu Stuti is one of the most famous stuti or poem composed by Trivikrama Panditacharya.
This beautiful composition is in praise of Madhwacharya.
The Stuti, which has 41 paragraphs, has been composed recognising the three avatras of Hanuma, Bheema and Madhwacharya. It is, therefore, a mantra as well as a stotra. Women are, therefore,  forbidden from reciting it. However, they can recite the Anu Vyau Stuti as well as the Laghu Vayu Stuti.
The Laghu Vayu Stuti is composed by Kalyani Devi, sister of Trivikrama Panditacharya.
There is another Kalyani Devi and she is the sister of Madhwacharya. She too has written a Laghu Vayu Stuti.

Here are the Kannada and Sanskrit lyrics of Anu Vayu Stuti.

The Anu Vayu Stuti is a short composition-hence the name Anu which in Kannada means small-wherein Vayu and his three incarnations of Hanuma, Bheema and Madhwacharya-are addressed.
We can see that the second line of  each of the verse has a single or constant refrain or line and this is “AnandatIrtha mahAmunirAjam Govinda bhakta shikhAmaNimIDe”.
Here, Ananda Theertha or Madhwacharya is reckoned to be the King of ascetics and a jewel among the devotees of Govinda or Krishna.
The first verse celebrates the moola roopa of Vayu who is addressed a Pavamana.
The second verse tell us how Vayu enters the body and becomes Prana Devaru or Mukya Prana. Here Prana means any sensory organ.
The third verse makes overt and covert references to the Monkey God or Hanuma, the first avatar, who lifted the Sanjeeveni parvata, and played a major role in the Ramayana. There is a reference to Lord Rama (Govinda here is Rama) too whose doota was Hanuman.
The fourth verse is about the magnificent Bheema, the second avatar. Here Govinda refers to Krishna and Veda Vyasa to the one who organised the Vedas.
The fifth verse celebrates Ananda Theertha or Madhwacharya, the third and final avatar. Govinda here means Veda Vyasa whom Madhwacharya saw in Badari. However, Govinda can also mean Rama and Krishna whom Madhwacharya worshipped.
The verse subtly says Madhwacharya took birth to uphold Dwaitha and silence all other wrong doctrines.

The Dwadasha Stotra of Madhwacharya

The Dwadasha Stotra  by Madhwacharya (1191-1278) is one of the main compositions that led to the growth and development of the Haridasa Sahitya in India.
Though the Haridasa movement began with Narahari Theertha, one of the disciples of Madhwacharya, writing suladis of which only three are available, it took off with the advent of Sripadaraja of Mulabagal (1404-1502).
The Dwadesha Stotra and several others works of Madhwacharya inspired Sripadaraja to compose Devaranamas and other forms of poetry. Madha seers after him and the Dasa Koota founded by his disciple, Vyasa Raja or Vyasa Theertha (1447-1539) not only propagated the Dwaitha ideals put forward by Madhwacharya, but they continued to be inspired by the Dwadesha Stotra.
The Dwadesha Stotra is a Sanskrit composition comprising of twelve stotras in praise of Vishnu or Hari. It was composed when the idol of Sri Krishna was being consecrated by Madhwacharya, also known as Ananda Theertha or Poorna Prajna at Udupi.
Another popular legend associated with the stotra says Madhwacharya had already composed seven slokas when he saw a ship in distress near Malpe. He saved the ship from going under and when he received the mound of Gopichandana in which the idol of Krishna was present, he completed the stotra by composing its other five slokas.
Yet another story says, Madhwacharya himself began composing and reciting it when some of his disciples poisoned an ox which used to regularly carry his works on its back. The Acharya had pointed at the ox when these disciples had asked who would write the commentaries for his innumerable works. Angered by this gesture, they had poisoned the ox. When Acharya came to know of this, he went to the place where the ox lay dead and recited the Dwadesha Stotra. The ox got back its life and in its next birth, became Jaya  Theertha or Teekacharya.
Since, then, this stotra is recited at the time of offering of Naivedya to Vishnu.
Of the twelve slokas, the third summaries Madhwacharya’s concept of dualism or Dwaitha philosophy.
The Dwaadasha Stotra has been interpreted and reinterpreted several times by almost ever Madhwa seer, Haridasa and scholar.  They have formed the basis for the Haridasas to launch their vehicle of music and devotion through literature.
The Sanskrit words are full of meaning and each of them go to back completely the Tatwavada of our Acharya.
Even today, this stotra is recited every day at Udupi during the offering of Naivedya to Lord Krishna.
There are several commentaries on this stotra and some of them are by Janardhana Bhatta, Gangodamishra, Panghri Srinivasacharya, Gûdhakartrka, Chalari Narasimhacharya, Channapattana Thimmannacharya, Umarji Tirumalacharya, C M Padmanabhacharya, Punyashravana Bhikshu and Vishvapati Theertha.
It is Vishvapathi Theertha of Pejawar Matha who says Madhwacharya had already composed five slokas and he composed the sixth when he saw the ship struggling to stay aloft in the choppy seas off Malpe.
